Frequently asked questions
What is MyNana?
MyNana is an iPhone app that helps families identify fall and accident hazards in an aging parent's home. By combining guided room photos with AI, MyNana generates a personalized home safety and modification plan in under three minutes, tailored to your loved one's specific mobility and routine.
Who is MyNana for?
MyNana is built for family caregivers and adult children concerned about an aging parent living at home, older adults who want to proactively adapt their living spaces to stay safe and independent, and occupational therapists (OT) or CAPS specialists seeking a fast visual baseline before an in-person visit.
How is MyNana different from standard home safety checklists?
Generic online checklists treat every home the same. MyNana evaluates hazards based on your loved one's actual physical condition (such as mobility aids, fall history, vision, and nighttime routines) and pinpoints hazards directly on your photos with clear visual markers. It connects findings to an actionable plan with cost estimates, distinguishing DIY fixes from tasks needing a contractor.
How does the app work?
The process takes three simple steps: first, a quick 1-minute survey about your loved one's mobility and daily habits; second, guided photos of key room angles (starting with the bathroom); third, an instant action plan with flagged hazards and prioritized fixes.
What hazards does the AI detect?
In our current release, MyNana focuses on the bathroom, where over 70% of senior home falls occur: slippery flooring and unanchored bath mats, missing grab bars near the toilet or tub, high tub edges and shower curbs, dim nighttime lighting, and walking path obstacles.
Do I need to be tech-savvy to use MyNana?
Not at all. MyNana is built with high accessibility standards: large readable typography, high-contrast buttons, warm visuals, and gentle step-by-step guidance. If you know how to take a photo on an iPhone, you can easily use MyNana.
How are the recommended fixes prioritized?
Fixes are grouped into 'Do First' (high-impact immediate safety like secure grab bars and non-slip treatments), 'Do Soon' (important upcoming improvements like motion nightlights or shower seats), and 'Nice to Have' (comfort and convenience upgrades).
What is the difference between DIY and 'Needs a Pro'?
DIY items are fast, low-cost fixes that require no wall drilling (such as non-skid bath mats and plug-in nightlights). 'Needs a Pro' covers work requiring structural anchoring into wall studs, electrical adjustments, or plumbing fixtures to ensure weight-bearing safety.
What do the cost estimates in the app mean?
They are reference US market price ranges (in USD) for materials and standard contractor labor, helping families plan an honest budget before starting. [FUNDING PROGRAM DETAILS — matching local grants and waivers will be announced in upcoming pilot releases].
Can I share the assessment with family members or contractors?
Yes. You can export a clean summary report containing your room photos, highlighted hazard zones, and prioritized action checklist to share via message, email, or PDF with siblings, contractors, or healthcare providers.
Are photos of my home private and secure?
Yes. Photos and survey responses are stored securely on your device. During analysis, data is transmitted over encrypted HTTPS connections to our AI servers solely to detect hazards and return recommendations. We never sell your personal data or share private home images with third parties for advertising.
Can I delete my data at any time?
Absolutely. Under Profile › Settings, you can tap 'Delete all my data' at any time. This permanently wipes all photos, family profiles, and assessment records from your device and our servers.
Does MyNana replace a doctor or occupational therapist?
No. MyNana is an educational and home-awareness tool designed to help families identify common environmental risks. It is not medical advice, a clinical diagnosis, or a replacement for an in-person assessment by an Occupational Therapist (OT) or physician. For complex mobility needs, we always recommend consulting a licensed clinician.
What devices does MyNana support?
MyNana is currently designed for iPhone running iOS 17 or iOS 18+. Support for iPad and Android devices is planned for future phases.
Is MyNana free to use?
During our pre-launch and MVP stage, MyNana is completely free for families to join the waitlist and complete home safety assessments for their loved ones.
